Dakota Lithium Review: Is It Worth Upgrading to Lithium Power?

VIEWS

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes with running out of battery power at the wrong moment.

Maybe your trolling motor starts losing strength halfway through a fishing trip. Maybe the battery bank in your RV is forcing you to watch every watt. Or perhaps you are putting together an off-grid solar system and have realized that choosing the cheapest battery is not necessarily the cheapest decision over the long run.

That is the problem Dakota Lithium is trying to solve.

Dakota Lithium specializes in lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries designed for demanding applications such as fishing boats, trolling motors, RVs, solar storage, golf carts, overlanding and powersports. Its catalog ranges from compact batteries for electronics and small equipment to large-capacity systems built for serious off-grid and marine power.

After looking through the lineup, the appeal is fairly straightforward: these batteries are designed for people who care more about dependable, repeatable power than simply finding the lowest upfront price.

Why LiFePO4 Batteries Are Worth Considering

The biggest reason to look at Dakota Lithium is the underlying LiFePO4 technology.

Traditional lead-acid batteries still make sense in some applications, but they come with familiar compromises. They are heavy, their voltage tends to decline noticeably as they discharge, and repeatedly cycling them deeply can shorten their useful life.

LiFePO4 changes the experience considerably.

Dakota Lithium’s deep-cycle batteries are designed to provide a relatively steady voltage throughout their discharge cycle. The company’s batteries also incorporate battery management systems that provide protections such as cell balancing, high- and low-voltage cutoff, short-circuit protection and temperature protection.

That matters more than the specification sheet might suggest.

When you’re fishing for an entire day, spending several nights away from hookups in an RV or relying on stored solar energy, consistent usable power is much more valuable than simply seeing a large amp-hour number printed on the case.

The 12V 100Ah Is a Great Place to Start

For many buyers, the Dakota Lithium 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Heated LiFePO4 Battery is probably the most interesting all-around option.

It is aimed at RVs, trolling motors, boating and solar applications and currently weighs about 27.5 pounds. Dakota Lithium has also added internal heating for cold-weather operation.

That combination makes it particularly attractive for campers and anglers who do not stop using their equipment just because temperatures drop.

A 100Ah battery also sits in a useful middle ground. It provides enough capacity for substantial deep-cycle applications without immediately forcing you into a much larger battery bank.

For an RV owner upgrading from lead acid, the reduction in battery weight alone can be noticeable. For anglers, having consistent power available to a trolling motor or onboard electronics can mean spending more time concentrating on the water instead of constantly wondering how much battery remains.

If you want one versatile battery rather than building a specialized system from day one, this is the model I would look at first.

Serious Anglers Have Plenty of Options

Dakota Lithium has clearly invested heavily in its marine lineup.

For example, its DL+ 12V 60Ah Dual Purpose battery combines deep-cycle capability with starting power and is currently rated at 1,000 cold cranking amps. It weighs about 16.5 pounds and includes the company’s internal heating technology.

Moving further up the range, there is a 12V 135Ah heated dual-purpose model aimed at trolling motors, golf carts and RV applications, as well as dedicated 24V and 36V configurations for larger trolling systems.

This is one of Dakota Lithium’s biggest strengths.

You are not simply choosing between a “small battery” and a “large battery.” You can build the power system around the actual voltage, capacity and discharge requirements of your equipment.

For someone spending thousands of dollars on a boat, motor, electronics and fishing gear, choosing the correct battery system rather than settling for whatever happens to fit in the battery compartment makes sense.

RV, Van Life and Off-Grid Users Should Pay Attention Too

Dakota Lithium is not only a fishing brand.

The same characteristics that make LiFePO4 attractive on the water also work well for RVs, converted vans, cabins and solar installations.

The 12V 100Ah model is an obvious starting point, while users with significantly higher energy demands can move toward batteries such as Dakota Lithium’s DL+ 12V 320Ah heated model.

A larger battery bank can support the things that make off-grid travel comfortable: refrigeration, lights, electronics, pumps, laptops and other equipment.

This is where paying more upfront can become easier to justify.

A battery is not a particularly exciting purchase when it is sitting in a compartment underneath your RV. It becomes much more interesting at 6:00 in the morning when you can make coffee, run your equipment and continue your trip without worrying about whether you have enough usable energy left.

Reliable power tends to become most valuable when you are farthest away from an easy replacement.

The Warranty Adds Confidence

One of Dakota Lithium’s strongest selling points is its warranty coverage.

Many covered Dakota Lithium batteries currently include an 11-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty periods vary across the product range, however, so it is important to check the coverage shown for the exact battery you are considering.

That distinction is worth mentioning because a battery should be considered a long-term purchase rather than a disposable accessory.

Price matters, but so do expected service life, technical support and what happens when something goes wrong.

Dakota Lithium also provides technical resources covering charging, battery selection, wiring, trolling motor setups, RV systems and other common installation questions. For buyers moving from lead-acid batteries to lithium for the first time, access to that information can make the transition considerably less confusing.

Are Dakota Lithium Batteries Cheap?

Not really—and that is probably the wrong way to evaluate them.

At the time of writing, Dakota Lithium lists products ranging from smaller powersports batteries costing a little over $100 to sophisticated marine and high-capacity battery systems costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

For example, its DL+ 12V 60Ah dual-purpose model is currently listed at $599, while the heated 12V 100Ah deep-cycle model is listed around $795 and the 12V 135Ah dual-purpose model around $899. Prices and promotions can change, so always check the current listing before buying.

Those numbers are higher than many conventional lead-acid alternatives.

But purchase price is only one part of battery ownership.

Weight, usable capacity, expected cycle life, charging characteristics and the inconvenience of replacing batteries all have value too. Someone using a boat twice each summer may calculate that value differently from someone living in an RV or fishing several days every week.

The more frequently you depend on your battery, the easier it becomes to justify investing in a better one.

Which Dakota Lithium Battery Should You Buy?

Do not choose based on amp-hours alone.

Start with your application.

If you need a dependable deep-cycle battery for an RV, solar setup or trolling motor, start by looking at the 12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Heated LiFePO4 Battery.

If you want a lighter dual-purpose marine battery capable of supporting both deep-cycle use and engine starting, look at the DL+ 12V 60Ah Dual Purpose battery.

For heavier energy demands, larger trolling motors or longer off-grid stays, compare the 135Ah and 320Ah options.

And if you are running a 24V or 36V trolling motor, shop Dakota Lithium’s dedicated higher-voltage systems rather than automatically assembling a battery bank without first checking compatibility.

The important thing is to match voltage, amp-hour capacity, maximum continuous discharge and starting requirements to your equipment.

Spending a little time doing that before ordering can prevent an expensive mistake later.

Final Verdict

Dakota Lithium makes the most sense for people who genuinely depend on their batteries.

If you fish regularly, travel in an RV, spend time off-grid, operate a serious trolling motor setup or simply want to replace heavy lead-acid batteries with a modern LiFePO4 system, the brand deserves a close look.

You may spend more on the initial purchase, but the real question is not whether the battery costs more today.

It is whether dependable power, lower weight and a battery designed for repeated use are worth paying for over the years you expect to own it.

For many serious outdoor and off-grid users, the answer will be yes.

Before you buy, visit Dakota Lithium and choose your application first—trolling motor, RV, solar, marine, golf cart or powersports. Then compare the recommended battery sizes instead of simply picking the cheapest model.

If the 12V 100Ah fits your setup, it is an excellent place to begin. If your equipment requires starting power as well as deep-cycle capacity, move to the DL+ range. And if you routinely take longer trips, buying adequate capacity now is usually better than discovering halfway through an adventure that you undersized your battery bank.

Check the current Dakota Lithium product pages, confirm your voltage and maximum current requirements, review the warranty for the exact model, and see whether a battery-and-charger package fits your setup.

Buy for the trip you actually want to take—not merely enough battery to get through the first day.
